At Macmillan Education, we are committed to leaving a better world for those that follow us.
Our businesses have a strong set of common values and a collective desire to have a positive impact on society. As part of Springer Nature, Macmillan Education colleagues are bound by Code of Conduct, which sets out guidelines and boundaries of how we treat each other as colleagues, suppliers and customers.
Integrity is built into our values, our policies and our procedures. We pride ourselves on being an ethical, responsible organisation and employer. Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy is focused on three principles: minimising our impact on the environment, enabling better learning and discovery outcomes, and protecting and supporting the people we work with.
Minimising our impact on the environment
We only buy responsibly sourced paper. We are a member of the PREPS group – a joint initiative of over 20 leading publishers – that enables us to ensure the paper used for our products is responsibly sourced.
Enabling better learning and discovery outcomes
With people at the heart of what we do, and as an ethical company, we support numerous charity projects. In 2018, Springer Nature gave more than €870,000 in donations and sponsorship to charities and organisations to support programmes that align with our CSR aims. This includes education projects, travel and childcare support for early career researchers and mentoring. Our employees also gave time towards a variety of projects that align with our CSR framework and support local communities.
Protecting and supporting the people we work with
We are committed to helping our staff develop with regular training and access to online learning workshops at a time that suits them. We give our people around the world the chance to raise money for charity and contribute to their communities, at work and in their own time, and where we can; we contribute to these causes and match their fundraising efforts.
We are an ethical and responsible employer and our Code of Conduct shows what we expect from everyone at Macmillan Education.
Enabling safe and responsible use of technologies
As a publisher with an ever-increasing amount of online content, we are dedicated to the safe, responsible provision of web-based information. In Spain, we support EducaInternet, a training platform for teachers to learn about the safe use of technology. This helps them to adopt safe practices and promote the responsible use of information and communications technology to their pupils in a fast-changing digital world.
In collaboration with Orange, Springer Nature runs the annual EducaInternet contest, in which teachers and students create fun, innovative and original resources to demonstrate the safe and responsible use of technology.
As well as promoting the initiative to schools across Spain, we have also created useful resources and videos for teachers on the subject of safe technology use. These have also been adapted for children with special needs.
The three winning schools were rewarded with a workshop for parents and teachers on safe internet use, and a workshop on technology for the students.
