To reduce inequality within and between countries by 2030.
- Evidence from developing countries shows that children in the poorest 20% of the population are up to three times more likely to die before their fifth birthday than children in the richest quintiles.
- Social protection has expanded significantly around the world. However, people with disabilities are up to five times more likely to face catastrophic healthcare costs.
- Despite the overall decline in maternal mortality, in most developing countries women in rural areas are up to three times more likely to die in childbirth than women living in urban centres.
These times of crisis caused by Covid-19 should also be used as an opportunity to invest in policies and institutions that can reverse the situation of inequality.
Seizing a moment when policies and social norms may be more malleable than in normal times and taking radical steps to address the inequalities that this crisis has exposed can put the world back on track towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Encourage your children to have friends from different cultures, read stories to your children that describe different cultures.
- Build more disability-friendly schools and housing for people with disabilities
- Stop stereotyping: write a blog with short stories that break away from these ideas.
