What does SLI involve?

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is a serious and long-term disorder that affects the development of language both in terms of comprehension and communication. There is no underlying medical cause and its negative impact can be seen in the social and school environment of the person affected. 

Characteristics

People affected by TEL also present other symptoms related to: 

 

  • Concentration 
  • Memory 
  • Literacy 
  • Mathematical calculations 
  • Emotions 

The needs of students with SLI not only depend on the particular characteristics of the disorder, but also on the school context which often places demands on them that only serve to aggravate their difficulties.  

SLI is not centred exclusively on language as the name would suggest. Nor is it a simple case of language delay or problems with pronunciation. SLI is a serious disorder that affects the student throughout his or her school life and beyond. All students deserve a school environment adapted to their needs.  

 

ENABLING STRATEGIES

Allow for groupwork and flexible groupings

Offer students the possibility of working in a groups.   

 

Use resources that include visual clues
Use socio-emotional programmes
 
Provide learning support

Offer students all the support that you are able to give them

ATELMA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting people with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and their families. SLI is an alteration in language acquisition and development that is not neurological, sensory or cognitive in origin.
