To conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources by 2030.
- The oceans cover three-quarters of the Earth’s surface, contain 97% of the planet’s water, and account for 99% of the planet’s habitable surface by volume.
- More than three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods.
- The oceans absorb about 30% of the carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming.
The pandemic has provided us with an opportunity to revitalise oceans and begin to build a sustainable ocean economy. A report by the United Nations Economic and Social Council for Asia and the Pacific suggests that the temporary lull in activity, as well as reduced human movement and resource demands due to the COVID-19 pandemic, may provide marine environments with much-needed respite to begin to recover.
- Use less plastic, it often ends up in the oceans causing the death of marine animals.
- Participate as a volunteer to collect plastic from beaches.
- Watch documentaries about underwater life. Learn about its ecosystem.
