MACMILLAN TEACHERS’ DAY SEVILLA– MAY 2019

09:30 - 13:30, 18 May 2019

We are delighted to invite you to the Macmillan Teachers’ Day in Sevilla that will take place at the Fundación Tres Culturas del Mediterráneo on Saturday, 18th May. This magnificent, eight-pointed star shaped pavilion, designed by celebrated architect Michael Pinseau, was opened in Abril 1992 for the ’92 Expo in Seville. The building’s exterior features beautiful Moroccan façades, tiled columns and calming fountains. Inside you can explore four different levels, each one sumptuously decorated.

At this event, you will have the opportunity to attend innovative and practical talks that will provide you with relevant ideas, activities and solutions that you will be able to put to immediate use in your classes. Plus, we have the pleasure to announce a special guest who will inspire you with his unique vision.

Moreover, you will be able to meet and interact with our authors at the book stands during the break. You can also take a look at the range of new Macmillan courses that are available for 2019.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Workshops

Pre-Primary

Carol Read.

The role of fantasy and reality in the early years.

Through a blend of fantasy and reality, children develop their imaginations and learn about their world. In this session, we will discuss the benefits of including a balance of fantasy and reality in early years English programmes. We will also explore a range of engaging, multi-sensory activities, which integrate children’s emerging linguistic abilities with their overall development and wellbeing.

Primary

Schuyler Hedstrom.

Creating a classroom for the 21st century learner.

In order for pupils to think for themselves, the teacher needs to establish the right classroom culture. By valuing questions and deep thinking, as well as collaboration and mistake-making, teachers can foster an environment where pupils are confident to test
their ideas, take risks, adjust their thinking and discuss their ideas with each other. This session will discuss many practical ideas including: which questions to ask your pupils, how to increase creativity, and how to encourage pupils to take risks.

Academies – Young Learners

Alison Blair.

Are you a language detective?

Applying language detective strategies within a communicative approach helps children to use English more confidently and develop their thinking skills and autonomy. We will look at many practical examples of how we can use our knowledge of grammar to regularly slip language detective activities into our teaching of young learners.

Academies – Adults
Kieran Donaghy.
Social Shorts: Using short films and videos to raise awareness of social issues.

In this practical session we will examine how short authentic videos can be used to raise awareness of social issues and values in the language classroom. We’ll explore a number of practical, generic activities which foster both oral and written communication as well as vocabulary acquisition. Teachers will go away from the session with a better understanding of how to use short videos to promote social justice and a number of tried and tested activities to use with short videos.

Tu clase es una orquesta

A teacher is a role model for their students. Not just by sharing knowledge, but also by sharing values, passion and waking students’ innate desire to learn.

Just as a conductor of an orchestra leads and gets the best out of their musicians, a teacher encourages and inspires their students, helping them make the most of their potential.
